BaFang mid drive electric motor

There have been some new developments in the E-bike world. Those would be the move away from the hub powered motor to what is called a mid drive motor. Hub motors are like ceiling fan motors mostly direct drive with some being geared and able to freewheel.

This category is the best selling and easiest way to motorize a bicycle electrically.... However, many off roaders are using motors sourced from the radio control world and mounting them upon the bottom brackets of the common bicycle which presents some problems for the designer... One of the problems is that these RC motors are very high RPM and there needs to be a gear reduction of sorts so that their power can be effectively used by the bicyclist as a power assist....I will link to some interesting articles...

The new BaFang motor system designed to fit most bicycles for power assist... This is the motor that I am seriously looking at to build up my second power assist bicycle. There is a freewheel mechanism in the crank itself that allows use of the throttle without pedaling.

A  video is worth a thousand words....

flying on a fat bike or on a 2 niner off road about says it all for this new system....
